Six Top Tips for Study Success

Six Top Tips to Study Success

I thought that since a large part of my blog will be about studying as a student, I’d start off with some of my favorite tips. I’ve tried to make them different from those tips you tend to see quite a lot- so I hope you find them useful. So- onto the tips!:

  1. Plan, plan, plan:

This has to be the tip that I find best for me. First of all you need something to plan with. I personally use a planner (I used to use a bullet journal) but this is only because I like decorating it. A plain notebook- or even just a piece of paper would work fine! Every morning (or the evening before) I will write what I plan to do (eg. studying or homework), write any events occurring that day (eg. going to dance class) and I will also record any notes (eg. remembering to hand in a letter). This way I know what I have to get done that day so that I can structure my it and make sure that I get everything done. It also means that I can tick off any accomplished tasks which I kinda love because it makes me feel productive.

  1. Record the hours you study:

This tip may not be for everyone, but personally I find that it works really well as a motivator. Essentially, whenever I study throughout the day I use the stopwatch on my phone to record how much I study. At the end of the day I then record how many hours I studied for. I will do this in a quickly hand-drawn graph for the week. This way I can see which days I am most productive, and it also motivates me to keep going so that I can mark down a higher number of hours. I also then transfer the total hours for the week to a monthly graph purely because I find it interesting to look at. Another benefit of doing this is that I can see a glance when I am not being as productive as I usually am.

  1. Have specific times that you start to study:

So the title pretty much speaks for itself. For example, I get home at 4pm from school, have an hour break whilst I eat my dinner and watch tv etcetera. At 5pm I know that I will start doing my homework/ studying- essentially doing the tasks which I have written beforehand in my planner. This way I have a structured day and can make sure that I don’t leave everything to the last minute.

  1. Get up and wake up earlier!:

Okay, so this one kind of sucks- not going to lie. But it does work. Sometimes I go to sleep at 9pm and wake up at 5am which is great because it means that I have two hours to fully wake up and get some work done before I even start getting ready for the day. Now, I’m not suggesting that you do it this early, but as long as you have some time for yourself in the morning instead of rushing around. This is great because it means that you are not stressed straight away in the morning. In addition, you can (as mentioned in tip one) plan your day. If you have time, and are willing to, studying in the morning is also great! It means that you will have less to do in the evening (aka more time for netflix) and you will feel productive and accomplished BEFORE the day has even started!

  1. Take breaks!:

It’s so easy to get stressed over studying and over-revise- especially because you can always do more revision unlike a piece of homework which can be completed. But you mustn’t overwork yourself. All this will lead to is an eventual breakdown which will mean you will be getting nothing done. Overworking yourself will often also lead to, ironically, worse exam scores. If you are tired you won’t be taking in anything- and you will be essentially torturing yourself for nothing. So I beg of you, take breaks. Make time to see friends, do extra-curricular activities and (of course) watch tv!

  1. Motivational quotes!:

Okay, so this one might be just me- but motivational quotes are SO helpful for me. I always have one as my lock screen and change it A LOT- often everyday. It means that if I am procrastinating by looking at my phone it will motivate me to go back to work, and if I am feeling down it will pick me back up again. I also find that inspiring quotes from people who have worked their way to their top are especially beneficial- inspiring me to be just like them. So, if you are ever feeling a little down, please just do a little web search for quotes to pick yourself back up!

Hot Choc, Procrastination and Poor Quality Photos: Sincerely Hannah #2

sincerely, hannah (2)Dear All,

At the moment I am drinking a lovely homemade hot chocolate and am supposed to be writing an article for the newspaper at my school. I was going to do it on optimism vs pessimism. However, I just can’t write it. To be honest, it is probably just procrastination but I am just in that mood of listening to deep songs and thinking about life and futures etcetera etcetera. Which actually sucks because this article should be due in tomorrow and I have got pretty much nothing. That means I’m not going to get much sleep tonight, but to be honest I would much rather write a blog post then get a bit more sleep. So here we are!

I need to start applying for sixth forms/ colleges very soon which means I need to know what A-Levels I want to take which means I need to, essentially, know what I am doing with my life. One problem with that: I have no flipping idea. Nothing. Nada. From a very early age I thought I knew that I would be a vet. I had every area of my life sorted out- I even knew what vet clinic I wanted to work at!! But then I realized that I can not stand dissecting animals (mainly because of my ethical beliefs) but also because I seem to be very faint-hearted and get very faint at the whiff of blood. Go me. I then decided that I wanted to be an author but that isn’t really going to happen. My current idea is law- you don’t need sciencey based stuff but it still looks interesting. But I just don’t know whether I want to go into a career of it. I don’t want my future to be sitting in an office day after day. I want to enjoy life, not dread waking up in the morning because I have to go to a monotonous job I hate.

I think that that is one of my main fears. I don’t want to be stuck doing the same thing for the rest of my life. It’s just boring. The life I want to have is one where I am constantly learning new things every day- having new experiences and developing as a person. But what do I do for that?! Even law- which is forever changing, would get boring. And, at the end of the day, isn’t it just another office job? We only get one life to live and I will not spend it doing something I won’t enjoy. I hate to be cheesy, but every minute counts- every second that we waste is another second closer to the end of our lives. I don’t want to die not having a fulfilled life.

Originally, I wanted to take Spanish as an A-Level. I thought that that way I could do a degree alongside a year travel. That way I would be learning and enjoying life. Plus, I have never been abroad and there are no plans for that to happen anytime soon. However, it has been brought to my attention that Spanish is the subject which I am doing the worst in. Although I am a big believer in doing what you enjoy (Spanish in my case) I also don’t want to take a subject that I will do badly in and therefore affect my university and career choices. I guess I just hate the feeling of not being good enough- regardless of what I do. But I’m not gonna get into too much doomy and  gloomy stuff!

But hey, on a happier note, I bought some Muji pens the other day which I have been wanting for AGES so they are making me very happy right now! So I think I’m just gonna grab another hot choc and ACTUALLY write the article for the newspaper- whilst brushing my important future decisions aside for another day (probably the worst decision but ah well). I hope you guys are better at being decisive!

Sincerely, Hannah xx

Sorry this photo I took is so bad quality! (2).png

P.S The newspaper article did not end up being finished so I’m having to do it now ugh

P.P.S Sorry for another ‘sincerely hannah’ post straight away again- I promise that the next one will be something different!

First Post

sincerely, hannah (1)

Dear All,

So I thought that it would be nice to have a little letter-like section to you guys here on my blog as it is more personal. However, I don’t think it will be like this for every post. I suppose we’ll just have to see how it goes.

As this is my first blog post it is probably best to start off with what my plans for this blog are- my hopes and fears (well, there are no fears from optimistic me. Actually that’s a lie, I’m normally VERY pessimistic). Anyways first of all, I like the idea of having certain sections on my blog. For example,  as mentioned before, I like the idea of having a letters section so- like this post- I can share my thoughts and document any events in my life. I think I will call this section, Sincerely Hannah. But I also want to have posts to benefit and help you the lovely person reading my post. I plan to do study tips for sure. Another way I would like to explore my student life is perhaps through posts tracking through my progress in school- kind of like a journal type thing? This way I could be documenting my journey and (hopefully) improvements. But there are also other aspects of my life which I would like to explore and turn into blog posts. For example, I enjoy writing so perhaps I might post short stories or writing tips I find useful. I’m also hoping to participate in Camp NaNoWriMo in July (after my exams) so I can document this too. NaNoWriMo is a writing competition where you try to write 50,000 words of a story in a month. Anyways, back to the topic at hand.

The most important thing I think at this stage is me learning how to blog. As, let’s be honest, I am pretty terrible at it. I would really appreciate it if you guys have any ideas on what you would like to see here. But I really do hope you join me along for this journey of my blog and life but, most of all, I hope that you enjoy it here in my little corner of the internet.

Sincerely, Hannah

P.S Apologies for the short and uninteresting post- there will be better ones coming (i hope)

P.P.S I hope to see you around!
